Water Tastes Better in The old Tin Ladle
Remember the old tin ladle that hung next the the kitchen sink in Granpa's house. Oh how I loved to go to his house so I could go straight to the kitchen sink and get a drink of the heavenly Heber water out of that ladle. I still love to drink out of tin cups or mixing bowls, there is something about it that makes the water so much better. Even Mom placed a small metal mixing bowl by the kitchen sink to mimic granpa's ladle. I am not sure if it was the tin that made it so tasty or whether it was the fact that it never went through dishsoap, that I ever saw anyway.
Tum T Tum Tum Tums, TUMS
Grandpa Dayton lived in the same LDS ward as I did, growing up. He always sat on the back row of the chapel and if there was room when we arrived we would try to sit with him. He was always fun to sit by and usually very entertaining. You know how kids need something other than the speaker to entertain. As grandpa started to get older we as kids were not sure if he was trying to test us to see how how smart we were or whether he was just starting to lose it. As we would sit in church he would always say "want a mint?", then hand us what we initially thought was a mint until we popped it into our mouth. It would quickly become apparent that the supposed mint was far from a mint. It took my dad to tell us that what he was giving us was TUMS, which is an antacid used for indegestion. If grandpa was trying to see how gulible or dumb his grandkids were, he must of thought we were pretty dumb because we would take the mints every week. The first few weeks we did put them in our mouths, hoping that they truly were mints but after a few weeks we would just take one to be polite and would fake putting them in our mouths. I would usually end up with a pocket full of tums before I would through them away. I sure loved my grandpa and I have many memories that I will share along the way.
Grandma Nellie Dayton
Some may not believe that you can have a childhood memory as early as this memory, but I vividly can picture grandma Nellie. I was born in May 1961 and Grandma Dayton passed away on August 31, 1963. Therefore, as you can see I was a very young child when she returned to our Father in Heavens care. The only thing I can remember of Grandma Dayton was that I would visit their home as a child. They only lived one block away from my home so she would let me stay and play while my parents returned home. After playing she would walk me to home. The memory I have is of her walking me to the corner of Center street and 2nd west, which was the point where she could visibly see my home and the front door. Grandma would walk me to that point then she would stand and allow me to show how grown up I was by letting me walk the rest of the way home. I still see her sweet face standing on the corner watching me as I looked back from my front porch. This is the only memory that exists of my Grandmother Dayton.
Beginning anew!
It has been 2 years since I created this blog and as you can tell, I have done nothing with it since. I now hope to follow the lead of my dear older sister Susan by adding blogs that contain memories of my childhood as well as happenings of my family.
